I'm not sure if this volition piece of work, but effort taking a picture and with your computer, renumber information technology to the number you lot want. Be certain file numbering sequence is gear up to ON and try taking some other picture.
Information technology might piece of work or it might not recognize the file as the real deal and just ignore it.

I must have a really good camera.

The cameras start over at 9999 so I started automatically renumbering all my photograph when I transfer them to Lightroom. I employ the date and sequence for the day starting at 0001 each mean solar day so my numbers look like this 06-20-2016_0001 This way when I see a file I know the engagement and what role of the shoot/day it was shot on. Works fine for me.

Re: Photo numbering reset

NickT is correct...

Take a moving picture, and let the photographic camera number it...
remove the carte du jour, and rename the image from the previous stride to 1 number less than where y'all want the camera to begine.
Insert the card, and take pictures...

i.e....

Assume you want to begin the number sequence at 4000

rename the last/highest image DSC_3999.NEF
the next prototype will be numbered DSC_4000.NEF

Be sure the reset numbers menu selection is set to ON every bit indicated in the link that Cindy posted.

I've done the same.
